Learn how AR devices detect and track images to attach digital content.

Image anchors allows augmented reality devices to recognize a 2D image and anchor digital content to it and the surrounding environment.
An AR device can observe its environment for patterns that match an image created by a user. When the image is detected, the device creates an anchor at the image's position, and sets it as a world origin. This becomes the reference point for all digital content, and it keeps that content in the same location as the user moves around.
Within the Trace app, an artist creates an image anchor at the entrance to their gallery. When visitors scan this image anchor, all of the AR art on the walls and sculptures in the gallery appear around them.
Image anchors allow for a stable reference point for AR content to appear. Image anchoring is common across iOS, Android, and headsets like the Meta Quest and Apple Vision Pro.
