Quick Description

6DOF, or six degrees of freedom, is a term that describes how AR headsets and controllers can track both position and rotation within 3D space.

How It Works

An AR headset or mobile device can measure movement along three axes (X, Y, and Z), and rotation around three more. Cameras and IMU sensors combine to work together to update a device's orientation and location within a space.

Example

A user is in a museum looking at an augmented reality sculpture. As they walk closer to the sculpture and move around it, the AR objects remain anchored in the same location. This is due to 6DOF tracking, since the headset calculates that it's has moved forward and rotated relative to the environment.

Why It Matters

6DoF tracking is an essential technology for any AR device. This is what enables natural movement and realism for AR and its virtual objects.
