Quick Description

Spatial audio allows sounds to play as if they come from fixed positions all around your space or environment.

How It Works

An AR headset or mobile device uses head tracking and spatial audio to automatically adjust the sound volume and direction as a user moves through space. As they move closer to a virtual object, the sound gets louder, and as they move further away, it becomes softer.

Example

Tessa is attending an augmented reality concert in her living room. As she moves forward and back, it sounds exactly like she's at the concert. She walks up close to each of the instrumentalists - the keyboardist, the drummer and the guitarist. She can hear their instruments as if they were all around her.

Why It Matters

Spatial audio helps to increase immersion and allows users to understand where digital elements are placed within their space. It can also act as a spatial cue to inform users the content is behind them or in a different direction.
