Quick Description

Field of view is the measure of how much of a digital scene is visible through AR lenses.

How It Works

FOV is measured in degrees and shows more of a digital scene or less depending on the optics of the device. A wider field of view allows users to see much more digital content without moving their head. Passthrough AR headsets usually have larger FOVs than AR glasses.

Example

AR glasses like the HoloLens or XReal have a smaller field of view and may show less digital content in front of you than a device like the Meta Quest or the Apple Vision Pro.

Why It Matters

Field of view affects immersion and believability of an AR scene. FOV is an important metric within the AR community to determine how advanced a set of AR glasses is.
