What is a Trace Recording?

A Trace Recording is an AR feature that captures your movements, facial expressions, and speech to create a holographic recording. These recordings are a form of motion capture and replicate your movements exactly. They can be replayed repeatedly for others to see you within a particular Scene.

Common Use Cases:

  • Guided Tours – Provide immersive walkthroughs of locations or products.
  • Instructional Content – Demonstrate how to use equipment or explain concepts.
  • Personalized Messages – Leave interactive notes or greetings within an AR Scene.

Creating a Trace Recording

Step-by-Step Guide:

  1. Enter a Scene – Open the Trace Creator App and select a Scene where you want to make your recording.
  2. Click 'Create' - Brings up the Creation tools within a Scene.
  3. Select the Trace Recording Tool – Tap the 'Trace Rec' icon in the toolbar.
  4. Prep for your Recording - Plan what you will say and where you will move in the space. Move to the location where you want to start your recording and focus on facing and speaking to your future audience.
  5. Tap Record – Trace will record your facial expressions and movements as you move through your space. Walk around and speak naturally while the app records.
  6. Stay in View – Keep your face centered and expressive throughout the recording.
  7. End the Recording – Tap the Stop button when finished.
  8. Preview the Recording – Review your capture to ensure quality before saving.

Preview and Save

After stopping your recording, you will see it start playing automatically.

  • Point your device towards the directional indicator to find your Trace Recording within space.
  • You can Play, Pause and Rewind the recording using the timeline at the bottom of the UI
  • You can go back to Re-record by tapping the back button and discarding your draft
  • Tap ‘Post’ to save the recording within your Scene. It will stay anchored to that location.

Once a Trace Recording is posted you can click on it to view it or delete it at any time.

Avatar Creation

You can edit your avatar before you make a recording by selecting the 'Avatar' button in the Trace Recording Screen.

Avatar Options:

  • Pre-Built Avatars – Choose from an initial set of 3D characters.
  • Abstract Avatar - Within the Pre-Built Avatars is an abstract avatar.  This is a floating orb that will glow and grow along with your speech and movement.
  • Ready Player Me Avatars – When you are in the 'Avatar' menu, select the Camera button to make a stylized avatar using Ready Player Me. This will allow you to take a photo of yourself to automatically generate an avatar or set one up from scratch.
  • Custom Photorealistic Avatars – Trace helps to facilitate photo-realistic avatars for Enterprise clients. Contact info@trace3d.app to create a photorealistic version of yourself.

Recording Tools

Use additional Trace tools to enhance your Trace Recordings:

  • Flashlight – Within the Recording Screen, you can select the Flashlight tool to point things out during your recording. There are several styles of flashlights, pointers, and hands you can use. During a recording, if you tap or hold on the screen, you will be able to point out things within your space using these flashlights and pointers.
  • Other Trace Tools – Before your recording, you can set up Models, Text, and Drawings around your space. These additions will persist within your AR Scene, and you can point them out and use them as references during your Trace Recordings.
